Medical Tourism Destination Services

World Class Centers of Excellence

There is no single definition for a center of excellence, but as the name implies, Centers of Excellence generally consist of teams of highly skilled medical and dental experts who are often involved in research and innovation to advance the field. Health facilities in our Approved Provider Network feature attractive destinations where our clients can consult with or be treated at highly-specialized, inspected and accredited health facilities with teams of healthcare professionals led by world-renowned specialists and authorities in their domain of expertise.

Many centers of excellence, however, are independently created by individual hospitals or health care systems. Therefore, the use of the term center of excellence by a hospital or clinic does not refer to a universal certification or set of standards.  Employers like Delta Airlines, Boeing, Pepsico, Lowes, and Walmart have created their own Centers of Excellence designations, partnering with national and international health facilities, including the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic and others throughout the world.

Many Centers of Excellence must demonstrate to auditors that they perform a minimum number of surgeries or treatments in a given specialty each year, that surgeon must have performed at least 125 procedures for a specific technique over a lifetime, and at least 50 per year, and report long-term patient outcomes. They must submit to an on-site inspection and independent audit to verify all data. At Medical Tourism Journeys, we conduct our own audit before granting a COE designation. We verify that the facility also has a dedicated multidisciplinary surgical and recovery team that includes surgeons, nurses, medical consultants, nutritionists, psychologists, and exercise physiologists and physical and occupational therapists and that they meet our other criteria and requirements.  Many insurers will not pay for certain procedures if performed at a facility that has not been designated by the insurer as a Center of Excellence.

Surgical Procedures

Every surgical specialty is represented in our globally integrated health delivery system™.

We've identified and approved top-notch surgeons in Cardiac, Orthopedics, Bariatrics, Reproductive Medicine, Dental, Breast Surgery, Urology, Cosmetic Surgery, Transplant, and other specialties.  We review their professional history, experience, research they've conducted, and checked references with other clinicians who trust and refer patients them.  Our credentials and work history review procedures are on par with the leading managed care and hospital vetting policies and procedures and all Approved Providers are reviewed by a peer review group of non-competing surgeons from outside their local area.

In many cases, as a part of our on site reviews, our clinical experts have observed them in surgery at the hospital or clinic where they perform the majority of their surgery procedures. We also measure and monitor outcomes both from a customer service and clinical results perspective as reported by our clients using standardized measurement and evaluation tools, videos, photographs, and surveys.

Diagnostic Testing

If you aren't sure what's causing your symptoms, we'll guide you to experts competent to evaluate your symptoms and past medical history and determine the most effective, evidence-based treatment approach. They will interpret findings from x-rays and other imaging procedures, laboratory testing and review of any past medical test results you've had. This can be especially helpful when a second opinion is desired.

Among the diagnostic tests you can get through Medical Tourism Journeys, we will arrange:

  • Cancer Staging Consultations

Clinical Research Trials

A clinical study involves research using human volunteers (also called participants) that is intended to add to medical knowledge. There are two main types of clinical studies: clinical trials (also called interventional studies) and observational studies.  In a clinical trial, participants receive specific interventions according to the research plan or protocol created by the investigators. These interventions may be medical products, such as drugs or devices; procedures; or changes to participants' behavior, such as diet. Clinical trials may compare a new medical approach to a standard one that is already available, to a placebo that contains no active ingredients, or to no intervention.  Medical Tourism Journeys works with more than 239,000 research centers in the United States and 197 countries, worldwide.

Medical and Dental Checkups

Preventive health checkups or the whole family are available at every imaginable destination. Save time and money when you decide to get a checkup at an exciting or interesting destination in our network.  Many of our clients go to a destination for a checkup and then decide to return for additional complex and comprehensive treatments. Others schedule their checkups through Medical Tourism Journeys so that they can combine periodic health exams and dental cleanings at a destination where the rest of their time can be spent relaxing and enjoying destination activities. They save time with our "all in a day" packages rather than running around town for lab, x-ray, stress test, eye exams, dental exams, colonoscopy, ECGs, mammograms and physical exams by their local doctor.

Many full medical checkup packages cost less than $500 and are completed in 4 hours or less by a doctor and medical team that speaks their language. Contact us to schedule a medical tourism journey for your next annual checkup.  Who knew a checkup could be so easy, convenient and affordable ... and so much fun?

Substance Abuse Rehab and Treatment

Substance abuse takes many forms. Alcohol, illicit drugs like opiates, heroin, cocaine, and others are not the only substances being abused. Many people abuse more common items as part of their addiction. For instance, abusing common household vitamins and prescription medications is increasing in prevalence and just as dangerous as some of the more popular illegal drugs on the international market.  Many local treatment centers tackle this problem head-on, but due to the social stigma of announcing an alcohol or drug addiction, many individuals seek treatment away from their local community.  Patients who choose Medical Tourism Journeys to help them find a treatment center to combat their drug addiction will find a world-class treatment and rehabilitation centers located in beautiful destinations on six continents in a soothing and peaceful facility to make the journey toward an addiction-free lifestyle. You'll communicate with your therapist in your native language.

Stem Cell Therapies

Medical Tourism Journeys work with providers who offer regenerative medicine, anti-aging and clinical trials using different stem cell sources  to treat a variety of diseases and conditions.  While bone marrow transplants are the most widely used stem cell therapies, some clinics offer treatments with umbilical cord blood, while others offer stem cells from the patients belly fat that has been extracted through a simple liposuction procedure and then minimally manipulated to extract the stem cells and inject them back into the body within an hour of the time the liposuction was completed.

You can find researchers who offer stem-cell treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as such as in Parkinson's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis and also conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis and other conditions. All are available through Medical Tourism Journeys wherever stem cell research and treatments are legally available.  Adult stem cell therapy for treating heart disease has been available on at least five continents for more than 10 years. Now researchers are conducting clinic research trials to help participants regain eyesight from complete blindness, and to assist stroke and traumatic brain injury patients to improve spinal cord injuries.

World renowned researchers have joined our globally integrated health delivery system® and are available to consult via remote telehealth communications and review your medical history to advise if you may be a candidate for stem cell therapies, but don't wait until the last minute. The window of time for potential success for each condition and each patient varies. If you believe you'd like to try stem cell therapies for your condition or that of a loved one, call us as soon as possible.

Organ and Tissue Transplants

All organ transplant programs in our network, require you to supply your own donor to be eligible for consideration.  Within the destinations available in our network, there are many locations where a patient and his or her familial donor relative are accepted for treatment and transplant.  Patients going to many countries for solid organ transplant must be accompanied by the living donor, who must also be a family member, such as a parent, sibling, son, daughter, or spouse. Cadaver transplants are rarely available to medical tourism patients unless they are residents of the country.

Our transplant specialists will advise you if you are a candidate through a telehealth consultation. They will also take time to explain the risks, medication regimens and other considerations you'll need to decide, and the cost and time you and your donor must remain at the treatment destination before you are cleared to travel back home. He or she will also provide the details to set your expectations for what will happen and how your lives will be affected post-operatively.  If you are approved as a candidate for transplant and decide to move forward with the plans for a transplant procedure, your Medical Tourism Journey Manager® will arrange every detail for both you and your donor.

We do not work with any program that sells organs for transplants, so please don't ask.

Pharmacy Travel Journeys

With sales volume of $333 billion , the United States is the largest market for pharmaceutical products, accounting for approximately 35 percent of the global market.  The biopharmaceutical pipeline also has over 7,000 new medicines currently in development around the world with approximately 3,500 compounds currently being studied in the U.S.

The fast growing segments of the pharmaceutical market include biologics, generics and over-the-counter drugs. Biologics now account for over a third of all new drugs in clinical trials or awaiting FDA approval. The approval and regulatory compliance requirements in the United States is extremely costly. Profit taking and research cost recovery and all those free samples given away and rebates add to the prices the rest of us (and our insurers) pay. There's no free lunch, anywhere.

The US medical device market had a market size of around $148 billion, and it is expected to reach $155 billion this year. The U.S. market value represented about 43 percent of the global medical device market in 2015. U.S. exports of medical devices in key product categories identified by the Department of Commerce exceeded $44 billion in 2015. There are more than 6,500 medical device companies in the U.S., mostly small and medium-sized enterprises.  Given the level of competition, it stands to reason that those countries that simply follow all the work done by the US FDA will be those with the greatest competitive advantage in the marketplace and a steady stream patients and consumers seeking the same brand name patent medicines or their therapeutic equivalents shopping for lower prices in other geographic markets.

Since 1979, we've organized pharmacy travel journeys for cross-border pharmacy shopping.  At first, the trips were only to the northern frontier towns across the border in Mexico. The program has since expanded now that air travel is faster and more affordable. Join us on organized journeys to shopping destinations where we know and trust suppliers to avoid or reduce risks of counterfeit medications being purchased at random pharmacy outlets. These trips require a brief interview and examination by a local licensed physician to ratify your existing prescription medications and order them for you in accordance with local regulations. U.S. citizens are currently able to bring up to 90 days' personal supply back to the USA.  Travelers are required to know and observe US regulations. Our job is to get you there and back. Your responsibility is to follow the law with regard to the quantity you can enter the U.S. and the kinds of medications that are permitted.

Your Medical Tourism Journey Manager™ will evaluate your routine prescription medications you take every day and determine if they are available elsewhere at a lower cost.

Some patent medications are very expensive to purchase each month. Patients who are covered by the US Medicare program often complain that while they may have a plan that covers some of their medications, the plan has a big gap in coverage leading to expenditures of more than their entire retirement benefits each month.  If your medications cost more than you can afford to pay locally, we will help you inquire about assistance programs that may help. If that doesn't work out, then pharmacy travel may be an option.

Recently, we found that to be the case with one of the most popular medications for atrial fibrillation and deep venous thrombosis.  That medication is available in the USA for about USD $7 per dose.  In India, we obtained the same medication; same number of tablets in a sealed blister pack from a reputable pharmacy outlet for USD $1 per dose.  In another instance, an injectable medication available in the USA for $112.50 per syringe was available for $7 per syringe in Nice, France.  An anti-inflammatory medication was $8-16 per dose in the USA and 8-16¢ in Mexico and the tablets were produced in a plant in Puerto Rico.

Not all medications are available, so please prepare a list of your regular prescription medications and the prices you usually pay per month and we will advise where the best deals are available.

We also receive notices of temporary fare reductions for flights, but sometimes we find deals where you can fly from the USA to Europe and Asia for under $500. We're happy to place you on a notice list in the event you wish to travel on your own and not join our group.  We'll share the list of the partner pharmacies in each location.

With Medical Tourism Journeys, you might get a quick vacation, a doctor visit and a refill of your medications abroad for less than the cost of a 3 month supply purchased locally - after all concessions and incentives from the manufacturer.
